270,000 culprits have already been arrested: an AI camera detects drivers with cell phones on their ears – there are still far too many drivers using their cell phones illegally while driving. For this reason, special cameras with artificial intelligence are now being used in Australia, which can recognize drivers with a cell phone by ear. A global novelty has already condemned tens of thousands of perpetrators.
130 million cars inspected to date have been upgraded, according to BBC Discover more than 270,000 drivers using their mobile phones illegally while driving.
Since March, the state of New South Wales has been paying fines for this infraction, after drivers who were arrested only received a warning in the first three months after the new system was introduced.
During the testing phase in 2019, this actually succeeded in identifying 100,000 drivers who were using their mobile phones while driving.
Andrew Constance, the responsible transport minister, told the BBC, who was the first to report the findings of the assessment:
“It appears that some people do not understand the rules about how to use their phones legally and safely. If these people believe that they can continue to put themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk without any consequences, they now face severe penalties.”
The Ministry of Transport wants to increase the monitoring system to a total of 45 cameras powered by artificial intelligence by 2023. According to the authority, the detection system is the first of its kind in the world, as it can take pictures of the interior of vehicles with high-resolution cameras in “all weather conditions.”
On Ministry website “Images that the automated system deems likely to show a driver using a mobile phone illegally are screened by authorized personnel,” it says.
Drivers who are then convicted of a crime must pay the equivalent of €290 and receive penalty points.
