As “ghost riders” on the bike path, navigating through the pedestrian zone or picking up their cell phones while cycling: quite a few cyclists have put themselves and others at risk last week, Gronau and Ebe That was evident in the bike-checking days last week.

Many police officers focused on cyclists, among other things. Special emphasis was also placed on the school environment. Because of the face-to-face teaching, more and more children and young people were abroad.

The controls revealed some traffic violations. 32 of the controlled cyclists were on a cycle path in the unapproved direction – they ignored the fact that the cycle path in question was not approved for cycling in both directions. The supposed “fastest or most convenient” option costs those affected dearly: they have to pay a warning fee. This is 20 euros if your actions remain without other consequences – otherwise it may increase significantly. Because “phantom cyclists” increase the risk of accidents for themselves and other pedestrians. In the case of criminally irresponsible children, the legal guardians were informed of their children’s misconduct in a letter to the parents.

The use of mobile phones by cyclists and other road users poses a significant risk. Police officers explained this to 27 affected people during the observation week in Gronau and Ibe, including 13 underage people: Both hands rest on the handlebars – fingers should be on the smartphone screen when cycling moving away as well as staring. Because if you hold your smartphone in your hand while riding a bike, you risk a serious distraction from traffic and should be prepared for a fine of 55 euros. Here, too, letters were sent from parents to the parents of young offenders.

The officers also checked the behavior of other road users: 10 drivers who committed offenses such as ignoring the use of seat belts, four who used a mobile phone while driving, and three suspected of being under the influence.

During the working week in Gronau and Ebe, the police found a total of 104 traffic violations, 34 of which were committed by children under the age of 14. In sum, the deployed forces raised 58 warning fees, sent 34 messages to parents and initiated five criminal proceedings.
