The Photos component is evolving this year on all iPhone 13 models. The Pro versions still include three units, but they’re bigger this year.
We’ve dedicated an article to the night performance of the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle units of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. In fact, the larger aperture of these two lenses allows them to capture more light and thus deliver much better night photos. You can see it below:
wide angle unit
In the daytime, the 13 Pro Max’s shot is less detailed than that offered by the 50MP sensor on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. However, we must realize that the Apple smartphone is capable of presenting a much better picture of exposure and faithfulness to reality.
Ultra wide angle unit
The same goes for ultra-wide-angle daylight. The iPhone offers less detail, but it overcomes this problem by showing better exposure. The light aura is also less powerful than that of a Xiaomi smartphone. Note that the wide-angle shot’s colorimetry tends to turn red on the Mi 11 Ultra. A frequent “problem” in the models of the Chinese manufacturer.
telephoto
Since the Mi 11 Ultra telephoto lens offers 5x zoom, we chose to compare it with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, a 3x zoom lens, like the one on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The daytime 3x zoom is adequately overexposed, and Apple repeatedly prefers a “flat” shot rather than cumbersome software. In contrast, the image is less specific than that offered by the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.
At night, in one as in the other, the result is unusable. The low-light zoom exercise is challenging in itself and smartphones doing this can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Here, note that the S21 Ultra offers a better exposed image than that of our iPhone.
Front unit, portrait and video position
The front camera does not change from the previous version. We find a 12-megapixel unit that provides high-quality selfies, without being flashy. The vertical position does not change either. The cut is always the same quality, even if the device sometimes encounters some obstacles, especially long or curly hair. The peach It still doesn’t quite live up to what the Google Pixel offers, for example, but it comes very close.
In video, this Pro Max model can capture up to 4K at 60 frames per second. There is optical stabilization in the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle units, which makes it possible to create shaky videos. Since the iPhone 12 Pro, smartphones can shoot with Dolby Vision technology at up to 60 frames per second.
This year, a new video mode appears. It’s called Kinematics, and it allows you to start a shot with a blur in the back and then bring that blur to the front. In fact, if we put two subjects (A and B) in a video, the cinematic mode will first highlight subject A and then, as soon as the latter lowers its head or turns around to subject B, focus is on point. Automatically on the latter – you can obviously force it to help the program a bit. Change management can also be done in post-production. You can choose when to make the change, but you can also change the aperture. For now, this cinematic mode works well when the lighting conditions are right — and on human faces. On things, it’s a little more complicated. We feel that the technology is still in its infancy; It remains to be seen if Apple will be able to modify it through future updates.
