Windows 11 on MacBook Pro M1: A great but powerful combination

So how does Windows 11 work on Apple’s MacBook Pro M1? I’ve been asked this question a few times over the past few months, and so far I’ve been a bit hesitant to answer it.

When I upgraded to the MacBook Pro M1, I knew a lot of things were going to change. One of them was that it was the end of being able to run Windows x86 on a Mac.

Yes, I am one of those people who use Windows on their Mac. You have to get used to it. This lack of support for x86 initially worried me. Although I absolutely do not need Windows, it is very convenient to have access to it. Booting Windows into Apple’s Bootcamp was not an option because it was no longer supported, and Bootcamp was not the best experience I was offered.

Parallels

Fortunately the good folks at Parallels have released a Parallels Desktop version for Mac 17, and this version allows me to run Windows 11 on Arm on my MacBook Pro M1.

The procedure to put your hands on Windows 11 on Arm and install it on macOS is very simple. Parallels describe this procedure here.

Since I don’t use Windows much on my Mac, I’ve taken some time to test it out over the past few months. At first, I thought potential compatibility issues with Windows 11 on Arm would make the work annoying, and I would have to give up using Windows on my Mac to run it on my Windows laptop.

Then I hesitated to recommend this path. However, due to Microsoft’s excellent work, the way Windows 11 on Arm supports a wide range of different applicationsAnd the great job Parallels did in supporting Windows 11 on Arm, I haven’t had any issues.

I now have a working copy of Windows 11 on my Mac, and I have access to everything I need. Life is beautiful.

In fact, surprisingly, when I switch to a Windows PC, I feel like I’m getting a second-rate experience. The power offered by the M1 Pro system, especially when working on battery power, far outstrips that of the competition.

It’s sometimes hard for Windows users to realize that I can run macOS and Windows 11 side by side, with a whole host of apps, and the power and performance on offer is nearly limitless.

The MacBook Pro M1 with 16GB of RAM breaks Windows with 16GB of RAM. No comparison is possible.

Plus, the new MacBook Pro’s cooling is much better and more efficient than any Windows laptop I’ve tested. Despite running system-intensive apps on macOS and Windows 11, I’ve never heard the fans’ reaction.

I still don’t know what Microsoft’s long-term intentions are with Windows 11 on Arm. But for now, the combination of MacBook Pro M1 and Parallels Desktop for Mac 17 and Windows 11 on Arm is quite a winning combination.

So here’s my take on Windows 11 on Arm running Parallels Desktop for Mac 17 on a MacBook Pro M1. For me, there is no better way to run Windows 11 than with a Mac.
