After a small CES committee in Las Vegas, the city of Barcelona was able to stage its first real show since the beginning of the pandemic. From February 26 to March 2, Numirama traveled to the land of tapas to cover Mobile World Congress, the global event dedicated to mobile technologies. Having given you our first take on our favorites on the show, now put away your disappointments. The word is powerful and doesn’t always express our state of mind, but you get the idea. Here are five things we regretted in Barcelona.
Xiaomi robot dog
As in any high-tech living room, we come across gadgets. Passing on the Xiaomi platform, we were immediately drawn to CyberDog, a robotic dog that was introduced in China a few months ago. Unfortunately, we expected much better. This replica of Boston Dynamics robots can do almost nothing and was mainly there to attract visitors to the Xiaomi platform. It worked, but we don’t want to adopt one.
metaverses everywhere
Becoming fashion from Facebook and changing its name, the metaverse was all over the place at MWC. Unsurprisingly, not many people realize her true interest. We can see the word The “metaverse” is written in giant font on a hundred good platforms, even when the technology at hand has nothing to do (roller coasters in VR for example, or a dance class). In short, contrary to what we might think at first glance, the metaverse never existed at Mobile World Congress. Even if some of us want to believe otherwise.
5G still looks to impress you
The 5G network, which has been available in France for more than a year, is still struggling to impress. You might think that it is now “normal”, but operators continue to do their best to highlight it on their platforms. For example, we were able to see a waiter being piloted with 5G, which is supposed to demonstrate the technology’s amazing capabilities for remote control. After several months of use, it’s hard to be fooled. 5G, in its current form at least, is not the declared revolution. It will probably be better in 3-4 years from now, but isn’t it hard to see demonstrations that are not in line with reality?
Prototypes too
At TCL, we were able to try very conceptual products. Some have foldable screens in all directions, others only work during the day … By themselves, the proposals of the Chinese manufacturer are very impressive. However, none of the prototypes that have been put out have ever really been completed. One was broken (one end of the screen was snapping off), the other could not unfold… This shows a larger trend for living rooms. Can a non-functional prototype be presented as a true novelty?
Less crazy than before
In general, we noticed that manufacturers were more cautious during the 2022 release. Where are the smartphones with giant batteries? Smartphones capable of turning into drones? What we love about trade shows is also the advertising craze. In Barcelona this year, there was nothing out of the ordinary or outlandish. We inevitably regret it, but we imagine Covid has something to do with it.
