How to be more creative? By creating stories depicting alternate worlds, as children and artists do. A way to stimulate your creativity by changing perspective, by bringing up unexpected situations. This “narrative approach” is a method that researchers at Ohio University have applied, in particular, to training executives – the 600 majors – of the US military (Annals of the New York Academy of SciencesMarch 2022). The idea is to create disturbing “new worlds” in your mind, like imagining that your business is filled with only clients matching the most annoying and demanding! What are the consequences for the company, how does it react, adapt? We are far from the “divergent thinking” technique known since the 1950s, a method in which the brain is a computer, with very similar thinking.
