The underside of Societe Generale’s mobile money failure – Jeune Afrique

The information was leaked at the beginning of March. First on Senegalese and Cameroonian news sites, then spread rapidly, leaving disappointed clients and observers of the small West African financial community stunned. Societe Generale puts an end to the adventure of Yup, the mobile payment solution it launched five years ago, in partnership with banking software publisher TagPay. The end of a dream for a hundred employees in seven countries (Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Madagascar) where the solution has been implemented.

However, the banking group boasted more than two million customers in 2020, which is double its initial target for this horizon. The solution has particularly spread to Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon, its two main markets. Côte d’Ivoire already had over 3,500 points of sale, two years after its launch in 2019. A number that doubled at the end of 2021. As for Cameroon, there are at least 5,000 distributors. When the initial target for all eight of the company’s markets was 8000 points of sale.
