During a press conference organised by the Ministry of Communications Technologies in partnership with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority on measures to protect mobile phone subscribers, the minister referred to the demand to increase the availability of mobile communications services in the country as well as the heavy reliance on the use of the Internet via mobile phones.

He added that the number of users exceeded 10 million people (an increase of 91.1%), while about 25 thousand SIM cards are sold daily in Tunisia.

The minister pointed out the increase in the number of cybercrimes and fraud crimes, despite the existence of legal frameworks and rules governing the process of selling mobile phone chips. This is due, he said, to the spread of services and applications that can be accessed via mobile phone numbers, including electronic payment services, banking services, and others.

He said that his ministry and the Ministry of Interior had taken measures to protect subscribers to fixed and mobile telecommunications services, including updating subscriber databases and stopping mobile phone lines belonging to unknown persons.

It is necessary to show a national identity card or passport to obtain a mobile phone line and avoid the arbitrary sale of phone cards on the streets.
