Filtr Expands Ad Blocking Across Apple Devices With New iOS 26 Feature

As concerns about online privacy and digital tracking continue to grow in the United States, ad-blocking tools are becoming increasingly common among consumers looking to reduce intrusive advertising and improve cybersecurity. A new tool called Filtr is aiming to take that protection beyond web browsers by blocking ads across apps on Apple devices.

Filtr Introduces Device-Level Ad Blocking for Apple Users

Filtr is a new privacy-focused tool developed by Kaylee Serena Calderolla, the creator of the Safari ad blocker Wipr. The software takes advantage of a new feature introduced in iOS 26 and macOS 26 that allows developers to filter internet traffic at the device level.

Unlike traditional ad blockers that work only inside web browsers, Filtr is designed to block ads and tracking requests across apps on iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.

The tool uses Apple’s new URL filtering system, which enables developers to block access to specific advertising and tracking domains before content loads on the device. That means ads — and the tracking technology attached to them — can be stopped across much of the Apple ecosystem rather than only inside Safari.

The launch reflects broader concerns in the U.S. technology industry over how apps collect user data and track online behavior for advertising purposes.

Privacy and Security Remain Major Selling Points

Ad blockers have increasingly been recommended by cybersecurity experts as a way to reduce exposure to malicious advertising and invasive tracking. Even the FBI has previously advised internet users to use ad blockers as a layer of online protection against scams and harmful advertisements.

Wipr, Calderolla’s existing Safari extension, already prevents ads from loading within Apple’s browser. By stopping ads before they appear, the extension also blocks the embedded tracking code advertisers use to monitor browsing activity across websites.

Filtr expands that functionality to apps and non-Safari browsing activity.

According to Calderolla’s privacy policy, the apps “do not collect personal data.” The developer also states that the software does not require access to personal information in order to function. Apple’s URL filtering technology similarly operates without requiring users to share sensitive data.

For privacy-conscious users, that distinction may prove important as debates continue in the U.S. over data collection practices by tech companies and advertisers.

How Filtr Works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Filtr is bundled as a paid feature within Wipr and currently costs $5 per year. Once activated, users can install the URL filter directly onto their Apple devices.

The software works at the network level, meaning it can intercept advertising requests before apps fully load their content. In practice, many apps continue functioning normally while ad spaces either disappear or show blank placeholders where advertisements would normally appear.

The broader appeal of device-level blocking is especially noticeable outside home networks.

Many users already rely on browser extensions or network-based solutions such as Pi-hole systems, which block ads through home Wi-Fi routers. However, those tools often lose effectiveness when users leave home or switch to mobile data networks.

Filtr aims to close that gap by running directly on Apple devices regardless of location.

Growing Demand for Cross-App Privacy Tools

Digital advertising remains a dominant revenue source for mobile apps, streaming services, and online publishers. But consumer frustration with aggressive advertising practices and behavioral tracking has also intensified in recent years.

In the United States, privacy laws continue to evolve at both the state and federal levels, while Apple has positioned itself as one of the major technology companies emphasizing user privacy as a competitive advantage.

Features such as App Tracking Transparency and Mail Privacy Protection have already changed how advertisers collect user data on Apple devices. URL filtering could represent another step in that direction.

For users seeking a cleaner experience across their devices, tools like Filtr may become increasingly attractive as app-based advertising expands.

A Cleaner Experience for Apple Users

After installing Filtr, users may notice immediate differences across apps and browsing sessions. Ads often fail to load entirely, reducing clutter and limiting tracking activity tied to advertising networks.

While some apps may still display empty spaces where ads would normally appear, the overall experience can feel faster and less intrusive.

As privacy concerns continue shaping consumer technology trends in the United States, device-wide ad blocking tools like Filtr are likely to attract growing interest from Apple users looking for greater control over their digital activity.
