Apple appears to be preparing camera-equipped AirPods that could introduce a new way for users to interact with their surroundings through Visual Intelligence and Siri. Evidence found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate suggests the unreleased earbuds may be nearing an official debut.
macOS Video Demonstrates Visual Intelligence on AirPods
A short demonstration video discovered by MacRumors shows a man holding up a book so a camera built into the AirPods can identify its title.
“With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later,” the voiceover says.
The demonstration indicates that users could ask Siri to recognize objects, provide information about nearby items and save details for future reference. This functionality would expand Visual Intelligence beyond Apple’s existing devices and make it accessible through wearable audio hardware.
AirPods Could Answer Questions About the Wearer’s Surroundings
The camera is expected to capture visual information and send it to Apple’s Visual Intelligence system for analysis. Siri could then respond to questions about the user’s environment or record information on request.
For example, a wearer might be able to identify a book, product, landmark or other visible object without taking out an iPhone. The software includes a direct reference to setting up Visual Intelligence on AirPods, strengthening indications that Apple is actively developing the feature.
The technology could also support hands-free interactions while users are shopping, traveling, commuting or completing everyday tasks.
Apple Warns Users Not to Cover the AirPods
Apple’s software appears designed to alert users when hair or another obstruction blocks the AirPods’ camera.
“To get the most accurate information about things in your environment, make sure AirPods are not covered,” the warning states.
That message suggests the camera must maintain a clear view of the wearer’s surroundings for Visual Intelligence to work reliably. It also provides an early indication of how Apple may guide users through positioning and operating the new hardware.
Unreleased AirPods Carry the B790 Codename
The camera-equipped AirPods are identified internally by the codename B790. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously referenced the same designation when reporting on Apple’s wearable-device plans.
Gurman suggested the AirPods could arrive as early as September. If that timeline is accurate, Apple may introduce them during its annual iPhone-focused event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the company’s anticipated foldable iPhone Ultra.
Apple has not officially announced the product or confirmed its release schedule. Launch timing, pricing, battery performance and the camera’s complete range of capabilities therefore remain unclear.
macOS Tahoe 26.7 Includes Other Unreleased Apple Products
The macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate contains several references to B790, along with mentions of other unreleased Apple devices. Such references can indicate that Apple is preparing software support ahead of future hardware announcements, although internal plans may still change before launch.
Camera-equipped AirPods would represent a significant expansion of Apple’s wearable technology. The addition of Visual Intelligence could transform the earbuds from an audio accessory into a hands-free assistant capable of interpreting the physical world.
While Apple has yet to confirm the device, the demonstration and repeated software references suggest the camera-enabled AirPods are moving closer to release.
