Google Adds App Lock Feature to Pixel Phones in Android 17 Beta Update

Google is adding a new privacy feature to Pixel phones that allows users to protect individual apps with biometric authentication or a screen-lock pattern. The App Lock tool arrived unexpectedly with the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update released Friday.

App Lock Adds Another Layer of Pixel Security

After installing Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, Pixel users can activate the feature by pressing and holding an app icon and selecting the new “App Lock” option from the menu.

The feature is designed to protect sensitive apps even when the phone itself is already unlocked. If someone gains access to an unlocked device, App Lock can prevent that person from opening protected messaging, banking, photo, email, or social media apps.

Biometric Authentication Required

When App Lock is enabled, users must verify their identity before opening the protected application. Available authentication methods include:

  • Fingerprint recognition
  • Face unlock
  • The device’s screen-lock pattern

This additional step can help reduce unauthorized access when a phone is borrowed, misplaced, or temporarily left unattended.

Locked Apps Hide Notifications and Remove Shortcuts

App Lock affects more than direct access to an application. According to Google’s description, notification content from a protected app will be hidden.

Widgets and shortcuts connected to the locked application will also be removed, limiting other ways someone could view its information or access its features without opening the app directly.

However, AI agents and other services that users have previously authorized to interact with a locked app may retain that access. Users concerned about privacy should review the permissions granted to AI tools and connected services separately.

App Lock Controls Available in Pixel Settings

Pixel owners can also manage the feature through the phone’s Settings menu. The App Lock controls display a list of installed applications, allowing users to turn protection on or off for each app individually.

This centralized menu should make it easier to secure multiple applications without having to long-press every app icon on the home screen or app drawer.

The addition brings Pixel phones closer to competing Android devices that already offer built-in tools for securing individual apps. While the feature is currently part of a beta release, App Lock could provide Pixel users with a practical new safeguard for personal and sensitive information if it reaches the stable version of Android 17.
