Expected for the next year, Apple’s virtual reality headset will be geared toward gaming, entertainment, and connecting with loved ones.
For several years, rumors have been circulating about a virtual reality headset and glasses developed by Apple. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gorman has obtained new information about the manufacturer’s mixed reality headset. According to him, it will be primarily intended for use in consulting the media, playing games or communicating with relatives.
While some would imagine that Apple could in turn launch it into the metaverse with its first mixed reality headset, providing an entire ecosystem that allows both to buy clothes and play or surf the web, Mark Gurman points out that won’t be the case. In his newsletter, the site spotted it Mac rumors, a Bloomberg reporter specifies that Apple will not seek to revolutionize uses with its first mixed reality headset:
A video game should be a strong accent for the device, especially considering the fact that it will ship with multiple processors, a fan, a high-resolution screen, and its own app store. Expect Apple to put the device in an ideal position for game developers. Next, media consumption. I expect Apple to work with media partners to create content that can be viewed in virtual reality on a headset. Finally, communications. Expect Animojis and a virtual reality-like FaceTime experience to replace Zoom.
Unlike Microsoft with its HoloLens, Apple will not seek to impress professionals with its first mixed reality headset, but rather to target the general public directly. If the connectivity aspect seems too close to the one that Facebook rolled out for its metaverse, it shouldn’t be the only use of Apple’s mixed reality headset. In fact, the company will also seek to highlight games, movies or series.
Expected release at the end of next year
However, as the Meta goes a little further by imagining a new virtual ecosystem using the metaverse, made possible by Oculus headphones, Apple will maintain a somewhat classic approach, without striving to revolutionize the uses. Thus, the accents that Apple has placed on its Mixed Reality headset will be somewhat similar to those already known by users of Oculus or HTC Vive headphones today.
Apple’s first mixed reality headset has been in the works for several years. According to recent information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it is expected to be in the next year, with start-up in the second quarter of 2022 and commercial launch in one year, in the last quarter of 2022.
