Several cases of MacBook Pro and Air M1 screen cracks have been reported. What’s even more puzzling is that according to these reports, cracks seem to appear for no apparent reason, as many users find them frustrated when they open the lid to use their laptops.
According to 9to5Mac, several contributors have exposed this anomaly on Apple support forums, as well as on Reddit. Some were even offered a free repair or product replacement, while others were forced to pay a few hundred dollars to have their screens fixed.
special reader for 9to5Mac, Ian Probert, for his part, claims to have spent £570 (nearly €670) repairing the screen of his MacBook.
None of the victims has yet identified the exact cause of these cracks. In fact, most of the users who encountered this problem are still confused. However, Apple’s help desk told a handful of them that they must have accidentally closed the hood on small debris, the size of a grain of rice for example.
Too small to be seen
While the possibility of a broken screen due to debris is always a risk for laptops, the culprit seems to be too small for these users to see or notice.
One user speculated that this could also be due to the bezel being too thin to effectively protect the screen, when the laptop is closed or moved.
Design problems are not new to Apple. Older MacBooks had major battery issues and faulty keyboards. The screen of any laptop, especially such a high-end laptop, should be strong enough to withstand small debris or screen flex.
Apple has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but it is hoped that the Cupertino company will find a solution before the release of its next-generation MacBooks later in the year.
