Today the Arnsberger Kloster Wedinghausen presented a new cultural and historical offering. Under the slogan “The Middle Ages Meet the Media”. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the monastery with their smartphones and discover previously unknown places. From now on, you can digitally access the lower part of the structural development, archaeological finds as well as the past life of the monastery. With the help of a free media guide, you can go on an exploratory tour of previously unknown places. After scanning the QR code on site, the manual automatically opens on your smartphone. Free Wi-Fi is available in the monastery area.
Virtual trip through the monastery
Archaeologist and director of the Berlin Museum, Professor Dr. Matthias Wemhoff (Terra X/ZDF, Berlin Island Museum) takes users on a virtual journey through the history of the monastery. You can see, among other things, frescoes, a long hidden burial site, a medieval heating system, a monastery office, and an ancient roof structure. According to the City of Arnsberg, digital reconstructions, animations, and augmented reality (“Augmented Reality”) displays illustrate previous rooms and functions graphically and in 3D.
The display makes it possible to see and experience the remarkable discoveries made during the renovation of the east wing and the extensive archaeological excavations at and in Wedinghausen Abbey in recent years. The reason why the City of Arnsberg created a new digital experience offering with collaboration partners, aimed at everyone. “I am sure the show will be very well received in our city and region, but also by many of our guests,” said Mayor Ralph Paul Pettner.
New website and pocket guide
A new website and pocket guide were also introduced. Under www.kloster-wedinghausen.de There is all the information. An interactive schedule, photo displays, and articles about the monastery’s history and present complement the online display, which will be constantly updated with event notifications. For guests who prefer to explore the facility without a smartphone, a pocket-sized brochure is available free of charge. This contains all the important information to read.
Offers are free of hindrances
Special emphasis has also been placed on accessibility to the offer. The website and media guide are designed to be user friendly and easy to use. On the website and in the media guide, introductions to the content are available as audio descriptions and as translation into German Sign Language. A listening station for visually impaired guests was planned for the monastery.

The project was funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development with the participation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the amount of 95.5000 euros as part of the LEADERsein project!
