Choose what closing the laptop lid does: shutdown, hibernate, sleep

Nowadays, most of us prefer to close the lid of our Windows 11/10 laptops after our work is done. Closing the lid may cause Windows to shutdown, sleep, or hibernate. You can control the behavior and decide what you want to do by simply closing the lid.

Most of us know that there are 3 special ways to shutdown your new computer running Windows 11/10/8/7.

1. You can put your computer to sleep
2. You can hibernate the computer
3. You can turn it off completely

The sleeping The Low Power option helps your computer wake up faster and faster so you can get back to where you left off. The chances of losing your work due to battery drain are reduced to zero in sleep mode because the operating system automatically saves all your work before shutting down the computer when the battery is very low. This pose is often used when a person has been away from their desk for a while. Say, for a coffee break or while having refreshments.

The Hibernation The option, compared to sleep mode, uses less power and gets you to the same mode where you stopped last. However, the option should be used when you know that you will not be using your laptop for an extended period of time.

Laptop Settings – When the lid is closed

Press Win + R together to open the Run dialog box. In the box, type powercfg.cpl and press Enter. This will open the small Power Options panel in Control Panel.

Choose what you want your laptop to do, when it’s running on battery power and when it’s plugged in. For example, under the power button and cover settings section, you can find “When I close the lid‘ Selection. Next to it, you can find options to help you adjust the settings for the power button or cover.

You can choose between Do Nothing, Sleep, Shut Down, and Hibernate.

You must choose Shut Down if you want to shut down Windows once the lid is closed. Select the desired option and click Save Changes to save the settings.
