France is accelerating in the field of digital identity. On April 26, Prime Minister Jan Castex and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin signed a new agreement decree Permission to create a means of electronic identification called Digital Identity Assurance Service (SGIN). This text repeals the decree issued on May 13, 2019 authorizing the creation of an electronic means of identification called “Certified online authentication on mobile”.
The decree is clear about the government’s intentions, which therefore authorizes the creation of the application. “This personal data processing provides holders of electronic communication terminal equipment (mobile phone) equipped with a contactless reading device, a mobile application intended to enable electronic identification and authentication”-Can we read there. Therefore, this mobile application, if ever developed, should enable information to be scanned from the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) in order to use it to connect to public or private services.
The credit card e-ID card that was unveiled in January 2020, gives itself 10 years to fully replace its predecessor. This card, in addition to basic information, includes a flash code with a photo and two fingerprints of a citizen over 12 years old. The last bit of data that this app can’t read.
The decree did not specify the possible uses, only referring to identification and documentation With public or private bodies or possibility “Create electronic certificates containing only those identity attributes that it considers necessary for transmission to third parties of their choice”.
