Through the grandchildren’s trick, which was usually carried out by a fraudster over the phone, the unknown stole the money from a 52-year-old man. This scam was carried out via WhatsApp.
In the Wörnitz community northwest of Donauwörth, a previously unknown perpetrator contacted a 52-year-old woman via WhatsApp on December 20, 2021 and pretended to be her son in a chat. The “son” wrote that his cell phone was broken and that he was using a different number. He asked the 52-year-old to transfer 2,000 euros to open bills for him before Christmas. He couldn’t settle this because his cell phone was defective.
The woman was in good faith and assumed that she had indeed been in contact with her son. She then transferred €2,000 to a German bank account identified by the perpetrator.
When the connection then dropped, I notified PI Donauwörth on December 22, 2021. Both the account data transmitted and the mobile phone number used are already relevant there.
In this context, the police indicate that this scam is currently being used frequently by fraudsters.
- Under no circumstances should you just transfer money
- Try to reach your relatives on the old cell phone number
- Report any fraud attempt to the police immediately
