Update

Microsoft officially started rolling out Windows 11, its new operating system on October 5, 2021. Users who already have a compatible PC can install it.

Atlantico: What are the new features of Windows 11? What are the most significant advances compared to its predecessor?

Jerome Durrell: There are a lot of new things. The first version of Windows 11 is basically visual. The interface has changed a bit. The windows will be more rounded on the sides. Microsoft has ditched the very square design for now for more curves, especially with File Explorer.

You will find the Start menu which is offset in the lower center of the screen and is no longer on the left as before. It has a more and more obvious practical side. This Start menu has been revised and corrected in particular to display the main applications more easily. You also have a new “Tools” menu. It was already in Windows 10 but has been reworked deep enough to show more information. Great progress has been made in multitasking with the ability to display all windows side by side via a button or appear as virtual desktops. These devices have already been on macOS for a long time. Windows took over. It is a very practical addition.

Virtual offices allow you to have offices dedicated to specific tasks. One is for the office and your work, the other is for personal use eg. This facilitates daily use and allows you to be more productive.

Another additional feature of Windows 11 has not been activated. This will be available in the coming months. Windows 11 will support Android apps. This will open up a huge field of possibilities because you will be able to have the apps you have on your smartphone today that will work on Windows.

Will it consume resources or allow for energy improvement?

Windows optimizes power and resource consumption. Laptops are the main beneficiary because they will gain a bit in autonomy. A powerful mini PC should also be a bit faster.

Is Windows 11 compatible with all computers? Will we have to buy new hardware?

Windows 11 is not compatible with all computers. There are prerequisites, especially in terms of computer performance such as a processor with at least two cores clocked at 1GHz. It should be a 64-bit processor, and the PC should have 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage minimum.

In addition, there is one important detail also, it is necessary that your computer supports “TPM 2.0”, the Secure Platform Module. This is not common on somewhat older devices, but devices less than 5 years old should be able to.

Is it well optimized for mobile phones, tablets and touch screen interfaces?

Windows no longer exists on mobile devices, but there are still so-called “convertible” computers that have a touch screen and can therefore be used as tablets. For the latter, the system is well optimized thanks to the possibility of switching to an interface designed specifically for “tactile” uses.

Best practices to conserve your phone’s battery life

The vast majority of tablets today run on Android or iPadOS, and the arrival of Windows 11 won’t change anything for them.

Will regular users find their accounts there? Who is it intended for in the first place?

Windows 11 is for all users who have a Windows PC. There are novelties in the interface, changes and nice new features that make everyday life easier. However, moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is not a very comprehensive and in-depth system overhaul. Windows remains Windows. But there are changes that make it easier to use it on a daily basis.

Within companies and despite the remote working period, your Windows PC will be easier to use with this new version. In large companies, changes are often managed by the IT department, which will update the computers. It will then be necessary to contact your company’s IT department to obtain Windows 11.
