“Fon Lèspri KoKo”, an investigative game with local colors

This modified board game takes place in a fictional place haunted by “spirits” from the Guyana Antilles. A concept that mixes gameplay and the tradition of storytelling. In order to present it to as many people as possible, the designers organized a tournament on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Carbet.

A mask on the eyes and a hat on the head, the players around the table are completely absorbed in their personality. They discover the game “Fon Lèspri KoKo”. A fictional place haunted by “spirits” (a supernatural creature) of the Antilles, Guyana and Reunion.

We were given a secret role. Either we’re cute, so our goal is to find the Creole monsters hiding in “Fon Lèspri KoKo”. Or we are one of those spirits and we will achieve our goal as a monster.

It’s a game of investigation, so we gather around a table and go through the night stage, then day.

During the night, we all close our eyes, so creole monsters will be able to act. Once that’s done, it’s the day and everyone opens their eyes.

And there, we see what happened during the night thanks to a game board that indicates who has been wiped out or captured by Creole monsters.

If players are disqualified, their card is revealed and it is time to investigate to understand who did it.

The peculiarity of this game is that it is inspired by our own realities. A concept that blends play and imitation of a narrative imagined and created by four young adults. Damien Lurel for game design, Eloïse Diot for graphics, Rikiel Baloji for coloring, and Rose Boyer for graphic design.

In Martinique we will find “Dowlis” and “Soukougnan” in Guadeloupe and “Maskilili” in Guyana and the cruel witch of Reunion, “Gran Mèr Kal”.

We haven’t had this opportunity to grow with games, support, or even cartoon characters that look like us.

The long-term idea is to give our incoming youth a tool, a cultural support that contributes to the collective pride of our community, our lands and our identity.
