Free Mobile now allows its subscribers an easier connection to the 5G network, for faster speeds and better desaturation of 4G sites.
If it currently covers more than 80% of the French population in 5G, Free Mobile owes it to the massive deployment of the 700MHz band. On the 3.5GHz baseband that offers faster speeds, the operator currently has 2,840 sites equipped, behind Orange and SFR. To take advantage of this, the operator’s 5G subscribers have so far had to connect to a site equipped in this frequency band. But this was before. Free Mobile recently changed its network settings and now it allows easy access to the 5G network. According to the findings of several members of our partner RNC Mobile, the Queen band (n78) can now be used between locations. “This frequency is no longer based on the same medium. Previously to use it, it had to be available on the location your smartphone is connected to. From now on, the perimeter 3.5GHz band can be added to the 4G network for a location where it is not available.” The Vache GTI teaches us.
So it is now possible to get better speeds on the free mobile network provided you have a 5G smartphone. “This will be a game changer in speed tests, particularly with nPperf or any application capable of providing maximum antenna speeds”, he adds. This development is also a way for the operator to de-saturate some heavily used 4G sites. This is also the first advantage 5G offers beyond the boosted speeds.
