Galaxy Z Flip 3: Size and Concept
Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the external display (1.9 inch) is more than just a small info bar, it can display a weather widget, several lines of incoming messages, and even a useful section of the viewfinder. But if you open the Z Flip 3, it will become a full-featured smartphone with a large screen. There are also a number of intermediate stages between “open” and “closed”. Half open, the Z Flip 3 stands firmly on a table without a tripod – in the top half of the screen, you can then shoot a selfie video or watch YouTube. The stereo amplifier should provide acceptable sound. The folding mechanism keeps the cover open at the angle of choice (flexible mode).
Face 3: Design, Colors and Appearance
Despite its 17cm thickness (closed), the Flip 3 feels comfortable. Samsung’s new colors are white beige (“cream”), green, lavender purple, and matte black, looking particularly elegant in contrast to the black of the external OLED display. Visually, unusual cases also make a strong impression, providing Samsung with a thick ring or strap. However, in practice, they shouldn’t be used to attach a smartphone to a belt or backpack – it’s more of a design gimmick.
When folded, the foldable display (Infinity-O-Flex) appears 2640 x 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 22:9 and a diagonal of 6.7 inches. It’s a great screen. When viewed from an angle, the torsion is visible as a slight bend in the glass. However, this does not bother you with direct supervision – the colors, contrast and brightness made an excellent impression in the hands-on test. However, only a laboratory test will show the color resistance and color intensity of an AMOLED device.
Respect: Samsung has also fitted the smaller foldable phone with a waterproof chassis for the first time. However, in small print, Samsung once again clarifies that you are not allowed to go on a living board safari with your smartphone: IPx8 means: Protection against permanent immersion in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes and in clear water only. No protection against salt water and other liquids, especially soapy water, alcohol and/or hot liquids. SIM holder must always be fully attached on locking the device so that no water can penetrate it.”
There are two 12MP cameras on the outside:
- wide angle: 12 MP (1/2.55″ sensor), f/1.8 . aperture
- Ultraweitwinkel: 12 MP (1/3.0″ sensor), f/2.2 . aperture
Inside there is a 10-megapixel front camera (1/3.24-inch sensor, f/2.4 aperture). But if you want to take selfies with the best possible quality, you can use the main camera better with a trick: pressing the power button twice opens the camera, then the central section of the viewfinder appears in the mini screen, pressing the volume button releases the photo recording.
The predecessor of the Z Flip 5G was really fast, and the Z Flip 3 5G was even faster. This is ensured by the Snapdragon 888, which is flanked by 8GB of RAM and 128 or 256GB of data storage. There’s also plenty of other things one would expect from a luxury smartphone, albeit a little less than the relative Fold 3: 5G and Wifi 6 (with MIMO and a channel width of up to 80MHz). The battery is not very big with 3300 mAh. But as a quick check from Wetter & Co. It works even when it is closed, the capacity may be enough in daily life. Charging speed is still good with up to 15W (10W wireless), but the power supply unit is not included. Dual SIM can only be used by combining an eSIM and a nano SIM. With the Fold 3, two nano SIM cards can be used instead. Biometrics is possible on the side using the fingerprint sensor in the power button or, with less certainty, using facial recognition using the front camera.
The best mobile power supplies in the test.
Fazit: Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G
If all goes well, the Flip 3 could be Samsung’s icebreaker for foldable phones. Because it has everything it needs on board: striking and successful design, good technology and robust enough to survive the daily lives of most users. Since the foldable sensitive screen is hidden inside, it may be better protected from scratches than a traditional smartphone screen. Another plus point: With the contract, the Flip 3 is within reach of more first-time mobile users. In this way, the future of the foldable cell phone could eventually lie in the clamshell cell phone.
