This year, the popular Lord of the Rings license was released in a video game version. The video game is called Lord of the Rings: Gollum, and it follows the story of Sméagol and Gollum. So we won’t be entitled to have Frodo or Legolas as the main character. Meanwhile, fans are wondering: The Lord of the Rings: Will Gollum follow JRR Tolkien’s canon of business? Investigation !
Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the trailer already says enough
To answer that famous question, let’s go back to the latest game trailer. Lord of the Rings: Gollum reveals the main character’s inner struggles. Players will have two gameplay options: succumb to Gollum’s violent tendencies or keep some of the real Sméagol.
These character choices already reveal a detail: Players can have complete control over Gollum, both in gameplay and in history. This is expressive, because the fate of the latter will be different depending on the choice of each person. So we won’t have the same tragic ending as in the Lord of the Rings books and movies. Of course, this is just a guess, but it would be better if the new Gollum / Sméagol game was different from that of JRR Tolkien.
If you missed the last trailer, it’s here:
Expected success or failure?
Creating prequels like Lord of the Rings: Gollum is always a difficult task. The editorial line can be predictable and spoil the suspense of the game. Moreover, everyone already knows how Gollum’s adventures end.
If the game is just a reproduction of the story in the novels, then expect a complete failure. The entire game will be summed up by Sméagol’s assassination of Déagol, and then the theft of the Ring. He will succumb to his own darkness while hiding in the Mist Mountains before his iconic encounter with the Hobbit.
For now, we can keep hope. Lord of the Rings: Gollum tries to distance himself from the movies as much as he can. Unfortunately, this may have the opposite effect on fans. If, in the game, the story of the creature in question differs from that in the movies, this runs the risk of angering players who will instinctively compare the two universes.
For our part, we try to update this article when we have more information about the authorship.
