How to extend the life of your computer battery?

Having a laptop is a good thing, especially for professionals in these times when remote work is sometimes required. But you have to know how to take care of him. Aside from the screen, keyboard and other precautions, how do you protect your device’s battery?

One of the most common questions is this: Should the computer be left plugged in and charged all the time or unplugged after the battery is fully charged? In an interview with the newspaper BBC“Battery technology is improving over generations,” says Ashley Rolfe, Lenovo’s chief technology officer in Ireland and the UK. ».

Batteries are increasingly safe and efficient these days, according to the expert, who noted that those in laptops “can perform between 500 and 1,000 charge cycles.” And therefore, Lenovo’s Rolf told BBC Mondo that keeping a laptop plugged in to 100% electricity at all times is “absolutely safe and completely normal”.

He even adds that “some Lenovo and other brands laptops use sensors and logic controls to make sure the battery doesn’t get overcharged or overheated.”

However, he adds, “maintaining the battery at 100% permanently will slightly reduce its autonomy.” In fact, certain factors such as heat may damage the battery. At higher temperatures, a laptop’s temperature can deteriorate more quickly if it is left always plugged in and “remained fully charged”.

“A charge at 100% is the heaviest state your battery can find itself in, because that’s when the voltage is higher,” says Kent Griffiths, a researcher in energy technology at the University, Northwestern in the US.

Thus, the ideal option, according to the expert, is to avoid keeping your computer “plugged in and up to 100% permanently.” And keep the battery away from 100% to prevent it from heating up, which can “put additional stress on the battery which can accelerate its deterioration over time.”

“If you keep the battery far from 100%, it can definitely last longer,” Griffith emphasizes.

Finally, avoid completely unloading your computer after you have loaded it. According to specialists, “it is better to keep them between 20 and 80%.” […] Limiting the load to 80% provides maximum benefit ».
