Microsoft has finally removed this limit that made no sense on PCs.

FAT32 is a file system designed by Redmond, the maximum size up until now was 32GB, but it has been increased to 2TB.

Some of the restrictions imposed on your computer have a historical origin that has never been adapted to modern realities, often because the need for them has not arisen.

Such was the case with Microsoft's restriction until recently regarding the FAT32 file system, a file format used for hard drives, USB keys, and a number of other media, which dates back to… 1996! Although other formats are regularly preferred these days, FAT32 is still widely used.

The FAT32 partition format, due to its age, was very limited: its maximum size was… 32 GB, although it could hold more. But everything has finally changed: as explained by English-language online media The EdgeFinally the statute of limitations has been lifted after decades of oblivion!

The new limit, more in line with the times, is now the new reality for FAT32: this is up to 2 TB.

But there is another limit: the maximum size of individual files, which remains capped at 4GB.
