The California group is working on a web version of Horizon Worlds, its flagship virtual reality platform.
For the Meta, the metaverse will not be reserved for virtual reality only. While its Horizon Worlds platform recently became available in the US and Canada, it will soon be available from the web. Andrew Bosworth, the company’s technical director, announced that it plans to launch such a version in tweet April 14. In other words, users will not need to use a VR headset to access it. However, no date has been set for the expansion of Horizon Worlds on the web.
In addition to this web version, Meta wants to make its platform accessible on other media. Earlier this week, Vivek Sharma, Vice President of Horizon Worlds, told the site the edge The company is working on a mobile version that will be available later this year. He also said that discussions had begun about a console-specific version.
Big commission on virtual purchases
Andrew Bosworth’s statement about the web version came in response to criticism of the Meta’s 47.5% commission on purchases made within Horizon Worlds. After announcing a test that allows a group of creators to sell virtual objects on the platform, you will therefore receive a large share.
In detail, Horizon Worlds will get a 25% commission on these transactions, but before that, Meta actually gets 30% commission from the Meta Quest Store, which is its own app store and is the only one that allows downloading Horizon Worlds. “If a creator sells an item for $1, the commission for the Meta Quest Store will be 30 cents and the Horizon platform’s commission will be 17 cents (25% of the rest), leaving 53 cents for the creator.”A spokesperson for the company explained the site interested in trade.
Andrew Bosworth explained that this commission received by Horizon Worlds will be 25% at the launch of the web version, i.e. “Much lower rate than other similar world building platforms”, like Roblox. Meta also defended himself by saying that this stake will not always go to him since he plans to roll out Horizon Worlds on other platforms that charge their own commissions. In the case of smartphones for example, it fluctuates between 15 and 30% for both Apple and Google.
