Free is welcome in the municipality. However, in the eyes of some, the trigger could have come with more loaded booms. With 5G, for example.
Free has expressed its intention to install a relay antenna in La Ferté-Bernard, a town of 9,000 inhabitants in the province of Sarthe, in the Pays de la Loire region. More specifically, the equipment should join others in the water tower, at 13 rue de Chateaudun, where Bouygues, Orange and SFR are already located. At a meeting on Monday, June 28, the city council unanimously gave the green light. The lease is signed for 12 years and will bring in 8000 euros annually to the municipality.
Didier Rivaux, the mayor, welcomes the result. This type of installation is full of conflicting interests between the needs of the users and the location of the installation. We can see everywhere that this can be a problem. There, at least, there are actually antennas on the water tower.”, he explains.
However, there is however. “Unfortunately”, sorry for Christophe Bessi, a member of the municipal council. “You can see the installation of 5G antennas everywhere. We could have taken advantage of this new installation to offer this service to Les Fertois, still on 3G?”, he wonders. As part of this project, the operator actually only committed to the development of 3G and 4G.
