T-Mobile has released its 2021 scam and robo-call report, which shows a marked increase in the number of scam phone call attempts. This report shows data about blocked calls using the T-Mobile Scream Shield app available to all T-Mobile and Metro customers by T-Mobile.
The report notes that fraudulent calls declined during quarantine in 2020 but gained momentum in 2021. January was the lightest month, with 1.1 billion calls identified as “Likely Fraud.” The volume of fraudulent calls increased over the year, with 2.5 billion calls recorded in November. A drop in calls has also been identified on weekends and holidays with an 80% drop on weekends.
T-Mobile identified bogus vehicle warranties as the number one scam type in 51% of calls. The Social Security Office was 10%, wireless service providers 9%, auto insurance providers 6%, and parcel delivery 4%. Calls are expected to at least drop significantly from December 23.

It should also be borne in mind that AT&T and Verizon have similar implementations with Call Protect and Call Filter respectively. Other MVNOs like Google Fi also offer call blocking, and finally, some phone makers like Samsung are including blocking in their calling apps by default. With operators adopting the STIR/SHAKEN protocol, improved call blocking is enabled at all levels. In fact, T-Mobile has been 100% compatible since June 2021.
