ESET has detected that the latest version of malware is also spreading through other messaging services such as Signal, Telegram, Skype and Viber. In the message sent from the infected contacts, the malicious app promises new WhatsApp functionality and a different appearance after clicking on the link. But this is a trap. So don’t click on the link!

Sneaky program

The malicious app requests various permissions during installation, for example, drawing over other apps, which can overlap with other apps running on the device. Or ignore the battery optimization, allowing it to run in the background and preventing the system from terminating it even if the device consumes energy and resources.

The malware was primarily exploited by attackers for use in a scam or subscription scam campaign, although it could be used for worse purposes. To protect themselves, smartphone users should avoid clicking on suspicious links, only download apps from the official Google Play Store and be sure to use a security solution for their smartphone.
