Where and when will it be possible to monitor it?

In a few days, astronomy enthusiasts will be able to observe a very special phenomenon that occurs very rarely. These are meteor showers. To make the most of the spectacle, scientists offer some recommendations. The phenomenon is less visible in the northern hemisphere, but it can be observed in France, as long as we follow the advice.

The meteor shower can be observed from July 12 to August 23, 2024. But there will be a greater chance of seeing it on the night of July 30 to 31 when this phenomenon called the Delta Aquarids becomes very bright once the maximum shooting stars are reached.

This phenomenon, which occurs during the hottest months of the year, will be easier to observe thanks to clear skies, according to forecasts from Meteo France. Around midnight, according to scientists from the Spanish Institute of Astronomy and Technological Developments, the activity of this meteor shower will actually be at its peak, three days after the waning moon in July.

Scientists also claim that this meteor shower is formed from debris from the comet 96P Machholz. The latter orbits the Sun approximately every five years, when the Earth encounters the orbital path of a comet. This orbit, the same astronomers add, is then filled with particles coming from the comet's tail, thus entering the Earth's atmosphere at high speed. When this debris from the comet hits this atmosphere, it breaks up due to friction with the air. From this collision, which causes its calcification, meteor showers are born, which are commonly called shooting stars.

What Scientists Recommend to Fully Enjoy the Meteor Show

Also, to fully enjoy this spectacle in France, which is most visible in the southern hemisphere of the planet, astronomers recommend positioning yourself in a place free from as many obstructions as possible. Therefore, it will be easier to observe this phenomenon away from mountains, buildings or even trees that may obstruct the view. Astronomers add that the Delta Aquarii will be easier to observe when you direct your gaze towards the darkest areas of the sky, which are generally located with your back to the position of the moon.

Finally, you should know that scientists call this phenomenon by the name of its specific center of origin. A “radiant” point from which all meteors emerge. The Delta Aquariids also have their radiant in the star Delta, also called the “Skat” in the constellation Aquarius.
