It’s time for fingerprint readers to occupy the entire mobile screen, and Xiaomi has already patented its own technology to make it happen.
They seem to have arrived yesterday, however fingerprint readers have been hidden under the screens of our mobiles since 2018, 4 years ago, also without any noticeable technical developments or improvements.
In fact, we have long heard the promise of fingerprint readers that would occupy the entire interface of the device and thus would allow us to unlock it by pressing our finger anywhere on the device. Although we have yet to see any movement or any prototype or functional test.
It seems that this is something that is about to change, because, as colleagues from GizmoChina in the Xiaomi offices told us, they are already working on a large fingerprint reader that allows us to use it anywhere on the OLED screen of a mobile device.
The idea is to improve the unlocking experience and speed, so that this new fingerprint reader works anywhere on the screen, although it remains to be seen how Xiaomi solves the power for the reader and unlocks its biometrics, because continuous operation will include an infinite number of unlocks Desirable while carrying a smartphone.
It’s time for full-screen fingerprint readers to arrive, although we still only see ideas and graphics without any working prototypes… Will those from Xiaomi be ready for the same 2022?
The disproportionate Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be this kind of mobile phone with a stuck camera
In any case, the patent has already been registered and granted in China, with the included drawings and an explanation of its operation, based on a series of infrared LED emitters that will be installed under the AMOLED panel and the digitizer of the smartphone. The receiving array will do the rest of the work, analyzing the reflected light rays to complete the fingerprint authentication.
The process is similar to that of current fingerprint scanners, although in this case the infrared LED emitters are distributed over the entire surface of the touchscreen, and they are activated only when a touch is detected on the touchscreen. Where we touch and the shape of the detected finger.
Xiaomi says that when the user wants to unlock a mobile phone with this technology, the touch screen will record the touch by taking the position and shape of the finger, so that the infrared array can do its job as described above.
It looks really good, although as I said, I have doubts about how to detect the mobile we want to unlock or we just hold it because the idea of pressing a button first adds complexity to unlocking and removes a certain logic from this development.
In any case, readers of this type will arrive sooner or later because Huawei is also behind a similar design, already patented in its case in six markets – China, Europe, US, Japan, Korea, South and India – although there are no advertisements or functional prototypes on display. at trade fairs.
It will be necessary to see how they implement it, but it will soon arrive for the convenience it will bring or at least it promises … or not?
