Getting young people excited about technology in a fun way – this is the BYTE Challenge of the University of Berlin Group of Gesellschaft für Informatik e. V. (GI). Huawei Technologies Germany supports an IT competition that will last for approximately three months as a sponsor.

BYTE focuses on transferring and applying knowledge about computer science. Students in grades 7-10 can participate in programming courses and other webinars in which current technology trends such as virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI) or blockchain are explained in an easy and understandable way. In addition to technical understanding, an emphasis must also be placed on the responsible use of technology in a social context. Topics like cyberbullying or achieving digital sovereignty play a major role as well.

Carsten Sains, Head of Corporate Communications at Huawei Technologies Germany, emphasizes the importance of digital education: “Huawei is convinced of the opportunities and positive use of digitization. In many professions – including traditional ones – it is necessary today not only to use digital tools, but also to participate responsibly in their development. It is beneficial and necessary to meet young people early. The BYTE Challenge is an excellent opportunity. To introduce school children to information technology in a fun way, empower them and motivate them to try new solutions.

Caroline Newman, founder and director of the BYTE Challenge Project, emphasizes the educational nature of the event: “Our mission is to attract more school students who are interested in technology. The BYTE challenge is conducted alongside everyday school life. The aim is to make the first contact with technology as enjoyable as possible for young people. We are very happy I have found such a well-known supporter of our cause at Huawei”Newman says.
