“Hi mom. My cell phone is broken. This is my new number…” Anyone receiving this or similar message from a supposed family member on their messenger must be suspicious. Fraudsters are now also trying to steal money in this way. In addition to the well-known tricks of the wrong police officer, the sudden phone call, or the grandson bluff, there is now another type of fraud. Perpetrators write to their potential victims via Messenger. They pretend to have a new cell phone number – often on the pretext of breaking the old cell phone.
Then the alleged relatives claim that they cannot make an important transfer because they allegedly do not have access to the account. Then they ask relatives to make a referral. Coesfeld Police are currently processing some reports of such fraud or attempts.
Police advise:
-Wenn Sie von Ihnen bekannten Personen unter einer unbekannten Nummer kontaktiert werden, speichern Sie die Nummer nicht automatisch ab.
-Fragen Sie bei der Ihnen bekannten Person unter der alten Nummer nach oder rufen Sie auf dem Festnetztelefon an, bevor Sie die Überweisung tätigen.
-Geldüberweisungen über Messenger sollten immer misstrauisch machen und überprüft werden.
-Wenn die Betrüger bei Ihnen erfolgreich waren, erstatten Sie Anzeige bei der Polizei.
-Sensibilisieren Sie ältere Angehörige
