Whether you love it or hate it, Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 can be an immersive and highly addictive open world to explore. So much so that we’d love to see them through the glasses of some of the best VR headsets out there. Fortunately, famous designer Luke Ross is currently working on a Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod and the best part is that it may be released soon.
as computer games Ross told the magazine, “If nothing goes wrong, it should come out in January. That’s surprisingly early for a mod of this size and a bit strange considering that Ross’s Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod will likely be before his CD Project Red upgrade will appear.” The current generation of the game, which has been postponed to 2022.
Luke Ross is known to have already created some excellent VR mods for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, so it’s not his first rodeo. Also, Cyberpunk 2077 has some unique VR compatibility advantages and disadvantages to consider, explains Ross.
“The big advantage of the CP2077 is that it actually plays from a first person perspective, which is very good for immersion in virtual reality, unlike the Mafia trilogy, for example, where I have my own “fake first person” camera.
“Now that my mod framework has reached a certain level of maturity, I can probably publish one game on average,” Ross continues. “This depends, of course, on the unique challenges that each game brings, and there is always the possibility that a particular game may not be modifiable at all due to unforeseen problems.”
And to be fair, it must be said that it was these “unexpected problems” that shaped Cyberpunk 2077 in public. The hasty development cycle of the game has led to game-destroying bugs, graphics bugs, immature gameplay systems and, in general, a lot of false promises.
Cyberpunk 2077 in virtual reality is tempting, but will it really work?
Cyberpunk 2077 has improved over the past year thanks to stability and quality improvements, but that says nothing about its compatibility with VR. Even if Cyberpunk 2077 is perfectly suited to implement virtual reality thanks to its first-person perspective, it was not developed with virtual reality in mind.
Ross admitted that this could lead to all sorts of unexpected problems. And while the modder’s VR work is generally impressive, there’s not much you can do with a game like Cyberpunk 2077, which already suffers from a slew of problems – aside from VR compatibility.
This does not mean that we hate the idea. In fact, we can’t think of anything better for virtual reality than the crowded and ramshackle Night City and the rugged surroundings. The neon-filled streets of Watson and the bustling, bustling markets of Jig-Jig Street can be an extraordinary experience – provided it’s not spoiled by the myriad cyberpunk problems.
