Good news for Tomb Raider fans, it has been officially announced that the upcoming Tomb Raider game will use the all-new Unreal Engine 5 as its game engine. The news was revealed along with the official release of Unreal Engine 5 during the State of Unreal event, and through an official post on Tomb Raider Twitter.

In this article, developers Crystal Dynamics said they hope the engine will help us “take our story to the next level.” The next Tomb Raider game is an ambitious mission for Crystal Dynamics, which revealed in its January 2021 community update its plan to “unify the timelines” for all games.
An upcoming Tomb Raider game is set to feature Lara Croft as a “veteran adventurer,” although unfortunately there are no further details on the story. However, reports that the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5 suggest that we should expect more technical excellence along the same lines as Shadow of the Tomb Raider 2018.

In a video accompanying the announcement, a Crystal Dynamics representative stated, “Our goal is to push the boundaries of fidelity and deliver the high-quality cinematic experience of action and adventure that fans deserve.”
Overall, this indicates that the upcoming Tomb Raider will use the full power of the new Unreal Engine 5 to meet those expectations.
