UL, a global certification company, has announced that Samsung Display’s OLED laptop display has been certified as halos-free.
On-screen halo refers to the phenomenon of light scattering where the boundaries of a bright target appear white in a high-contrast image, like a crescent moon in the night sky. Light distortion is common on liquid crystal display (LCD) products equipped with local dimming.
An internal blur test by Samsung Display found that the self-illuminating OLED panels showed no blur at 0.00%. On the other hand, the LCD panels showed some blur.
In particular, assuming several people watch a laptop screen together, when the degree of blurring was rated when the angles were 45° and 60°, the OLED screen showed no bright blur. On the other hand, the local dimming-based LCD screen showed that the blurring increased from 3 to 8 times with the increase of the viewing angle compared to the front screen view.
