Fathom Entertainment is expanding its theatrical distribution strategy, bringing animated films to thousands of North American theaters while exploring new opportunities with digital creators and younger audiences. CEO Jason Brenek says the success of Wildwood and The Amazing Digital Circus demonstrates growing demand for distinctive storytelling and shared moviegoing experiences.
‘Wildwood’ Marks a Major Milestone for Fathom Entertainment
Speaking at the Tokyo International Film Festival, Brenek discussed Fathom’s decision to distribute Laika’s stop-motion animated feature Wildwood as its first traditional wide theatrical release.
The film expanded by 150 screens during its second week, reaching 3,103 locations across the United States and Canada. It represents the largest theatrical release in Fathom’s 20-year history.
Brenek, who became CEO in July, attributed the partnership to Fathom’s longstanding relationship with Laika, particularly through annual theatrical rereleases of Coraline.
“Human-driven creativity is something that we’ve always been big in, whether it’s been in anime or in stop-motion animation,” Brenek said.
The partnership also gives Laika greater involvement in marketing and audience engagement, an approach the animation studio sought after years of working within traditional Hollywood distribution systems.
Fathom’s ownership by AMC, Cinemark and Regal provides access to theater chains representing approximately half of U.S. cinema screens.
Strong Box Office Performance Highlights Demand for Handmade Animation
Wildwood, which spent 16 years in development, earned an estimated $9 million during its second domestic weekend, declining just 27% from its opening weekend.
Its 10-day domestic box office total reached $27.4 million.
According to audience research provided by Fathom, 96% of viewers rated the film excellent or very good, while 87% said they would definitely recommend it.
Brenek believes the film’s reception reflects renewed appreciation for handcrafted animation amid the entertainment industry’s growing adoption of artificial intelligence.
He also identified Generation Z and millennials as important audiences increasingly treating movie theaters as social gathering spaces.
‘The Amazing Digital Circus’ Surprises Hollywood With $25 Million
Fathom’s expansion into animation originating on digital platforms has produced unexpected results.
The Amazing Digital Circus, which developed an established online following before reaching theaters, generated approximately $25 million at the box office.
Brenek acknowledged that its commercial performance exceeded industry expectations.
“No one thought that it would do the type of business that it did,” he said.
The success has encouraged Fathom to examine other projects emerging from YouTube, Instagram and independent online communities.
Films such as Obsession, Iron Lung and Backrooms have further demonstrated how creator-driven entertainment can attract theatrical audiences.
Digital Creators Become a New Source of Theatrical Content
Brenek said Fathom is actively communicating with online creators whose projects could justify nationwide theatrical releases.
The company is particularly interested in entertainment with established fan communities willing to pay for a shared big-screen experience.
Fathom’s distribution model generally favors productions capable of reaching approximately 1,000 theaters or more, rather than smaller independent releases limited to a few hundred locations.
Release timing, competition from other movies and effective marketing also influence distribution decisions.
For Wildwood, Brenek said Laika’s carefully planned promotional campaign helped preserve the film’s surprises while building audience interest.
Fathom Plans More Interactive Movie Theater Experiences
Beyond traditional screenings, Fathom intends to expand special theatrical events featuring creator discussions, exclusive footage, behind-the-scenes material and previews of upcoming projects.
Brenek believes these additions can distinguish moviegoing from streaming entertainment at home.
The company has already experimented with franchise-focused experiences, including extended-edition screenings of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Such events can incorporate collectibles, merchandise, themed refreshments and opportunities for fans to attend in costume.
According to Brenek, younger audiences increasingly want memorable, in-person experiences that encourage community participation.
Anime Distribution Remains a Major Growth Priority
Japanese animation continues to play a central role in Fathom’s long-term strategy.
Brenek said the company intends to strengthen relationships with Japanese production studios and creative teams while reducing the delay between domestic Japanese premieres and American theatrical releases.
Fathom has distributed anime productions to U.S. theaters throughout its two-decade history.
The company believes digitally connected international fan communities now expect faster access to major anime releases.
Closer cooperation with Japanese creators could help Fathom deliver new productions to American audiences more efficiently.
Fathom Sees New Opportunities in Animation and Independent Storytelling
Fathom Entertainment’s evolving strategy reflects broader changes in theatrical distribution, particularly the growing influence of online communities, independent creators and established animation fan bases.
With Wildwood demonstrating the potential of handcrafted animation and The Amazing Digital Circus revealing the commercial strength of internet-born entertainment, Fathom is positioning itself to connect emerging creators with nationwide cinema audiences.
Brenek’s priorities suggest that future theatrical success may increasingly depend on distinctive storytelling, engaged fan communities and experiences that audiences cannot easily recreate at home.
