Windows: Hide the RAR file in the image

Those who do coding may spark other people’s curiosity. Everyone camouflaging does not have this deficiency.

FifthMaybe everyone has their own smaller and bigger secrets. These don’t have to be illegal until you feel the urge to guard and hide them. One approach to meeting this need for protection is encryption. The drawback: Although this is often secure, the encryption sparks the curiosity of third parties. These files can override files that are easy to find and password protected. An alternative to encryption is obfuscation. (On) Packer WinRAR Well suited for this: you don’t just use it encrypting files and folders, and also, if desired, filenames. You can also use trial software to create RAR archives. You can combine it with Windows capabilities: The command line combines a selectable RAR archive with a JPG or GIF image file. The result is a mixed file that, when clicked twice, reveals different things depending on the ending. Depending on how the ending is renamed, the image section opens (blur, harmless depending on the content of the image) or sensitive RAR archive. The latter contains files that you pre-filled.

Preparation: merging files

First, merge two files into one: this creates a copy, so the original files remain – delete them if necessary. You don’t need an installed package (un) like WinRAR to merge files. If you already have a RAR file, you can do without WinRAR. Even without the software, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 20H2 (October 2020 Update) can create a single file from two files. However, WinRAR is required to create and open RAR archives (a competitor’s cloud cannot do this) – so the installation makes sense. Start a command line using Windows-R and poultice. Make sure you have a harmless JPG or GIF file. These coils are suitable due to the internal structure. In the CMD command line window, type:

Copy / b FirstFile.jpg + SecondFile.rar target path

You are replacing ErsteDatei.jpg And the The second file. gif Through the paths to your image and RAR file. You can easily move them to the window by dragging and dropping files. Alternatively, right-click it on the desktop while holding down the Shift key: then select “Copy as Path” and paste it into the command line with a right-click. With Windows 10, a right-click is sufficient to “Paste”, copy and paste; With Windows 7 / 8.1, it is necessary to click on the “Paste” context command. You can replace the target path parameter with a folder and a file name: here specifies where and under what name the fusion object is to be created.

Completely, it might look something like this:

Copy / b “C: Users teddy Desktop FirstFile.jpg” + “C: Users teddy Desktop SecondFile.rar” C: Users teddy Desktop Result.jpg “

It can be implemented flexibly

Regardless of whether you use a JPEG or GIF file as merging material: You are free to choose the resulting file format. Instead of using the same format, use a different format; Endings jpg, gif and rar are possible.

Rename the resulting file: With jpg extension, you can change it to rar or gif, while with gif extension, new extensions rar and jpg can be used. If you’ve defined RAR as the resulting file format, switch to one of the other named file formats when renaming.

It is important to rename that Windows displays file extensions. In this case, open the Run dialog box with Windows-R and go to Control folders In the folder options. There, switch to the “View” tab and deactivate “Hide extensions for known file types”.

Partially allowed changes

Did you create your files in RAR format or rename JPG / GIF to RAR archive? With WinRAR you can open an archive and make changes to it. What about switching file names, deleting files from the archive, or adding new items to it? The blur file remains the same in these scenarios – even if the ending changes from rar to jpg / gif, the image viewer should still display the content.

On the other hand, changes to the image are taboo: if your split-personality file has a jpg / gif extension, the smallest pixel modification makes the content unreadable. Image Viewer still opens the file, but WinRAR doesn’t know what to do with it after renaming it to a RAR file.

Troubleshooting Tips

It is better not to delete the original files after creating the fusion copy, but first check the functionality of the last file. It happens that the arrangement of the files specified in the command line plays a role: if you find files that are not usable, you must first specify the image file in CMD, and then the RAR file after the “+” sign. By the way, you can quickly see if the image file contains additional data from the file properties: if you store an ISO image (in the RAR file), the image file size is unusually large. This might make other parties suspicious, but for you this is an indication that renaming to the rar file name extension to hunt hidden files could be helpful.
