AST SpaceMobile, a leading satellite communications company, has taken a giant step toward its goal of providing a satellite-based mobile communications network. This advancement could turn any standard smartphone into a satellite phone without the need for additional hardware.
Successful launch of satellite communications network
After announcing the launch of its network of five commercial satellites into low Earth orbit on September 12, the launch was completed successfully this morning. This network is called Bluebirdequipped with communications arrays that aim to provide standard smartphones with the same quality of voice, data and video speed as a terrestrial communications tower.
Worldwide coverage for all smartphones
Once in orbit, the AST satellites will provide service. “Uninterrupted cellular broadband across the United States and in select markets around the world”This network will allow unmodified cell phones to function as satellite phones, providing a communications option for cell phone users even in areas with limited cell tower coverage, such as rural communities or national parks.
Partnership with AT&T and Verizon
Initially, this BlueBird network will focus on serving test customers on AT&T and Verizon networks. AST entered into an agreement with AT&T in May to offer satellite connectivity to its customers. The company has also worked with AT&T to achieve the first successful two-way voice call over its satellites in April 2023, followed by a successful 4G data download test in June 2023.
