What is Metaverse?
Metaverse is a term for a group of virtual worlds. Think of the metaverse as the realm of virtual worlds. But what are these virtual worlds? Virtual worlds are in virtual reality and augmented reality apps and games, where everything happens…almost!
For example, you can take your metaverse avatar (a character that represents you) to the pub in a virtual pub simulator and then head to a live virtual concert. Or you can host a meeting with remote employees. In fact, you will not go anywhere, you will simply move in the virtual world.
All the various applications and programs designed for the metaverse are connected to a network and you can represent yourself as an avatar. It’s as if you can go online.
Companies are just starting to make games and software for the metaverse because it’s so new. So a lot of the metaverse talk is an assumption and not what we currently have.
It’s also worth noting that the concept of the metaverse first appeared in a science fiction book that was published in the 1990s, so it’s been talked about for a while.
How does the metaverse work?
The metaverse works by connecting multiple virtual environments through the metaverse. Each of these environments comes from an app that you download for your VR or AR device.
Yes, you read that correctly. To access the Metaverse, you’ll need a VR or AR headset (or both) to view the default content. Naturally, the content you discover will also be different.
If you visit somewhere in the metaverse with an AR headset, everything will be superimposed on real life. If you are using a VR headset, the environment will be completely virtual.
Is metaverse important?
Meta clearly thinks the Metaverse is the next big thing, as the company changed its name from Facebook and also changed the name of its Oculus Quest sub-brand to Meta Quest in an frankly bizarre move. But does the Metaverse really matter?
On the other hand, it may seem silly to spend time in such a virtual world. Why don’t you really come out? It’s just a video game, after all.
But for others, the Metaverse can be an exciting retreat from real life. It can also be a way to simulate real meetings when you live far away. So you can see why some people are so interested.
Since the Metaverse isn’t really a thing yet, it’s hard to accurately judge whether or not it matters. It certainly raises questions about how we will spend time in the future, and a lot of it depends on people’s opinions.
Remember, no one predicted how much we would use social media platforms in our daily interactions before Facebook was invented.

Nobody really knows what’s next for the Metaverse. The Metaverse didn’t even exist a few years ago, so we don’t know where the technology might go next.
What we can say is that the next few years will be the most important time for the Metaverse. Either we will see the technology grow and start adopting it, or we will see it decline.
