Free Mobile provides VoWiFi news

While the list of compatible smartphones is long overdue, the operator announces a new model that supports VoWiFi and is transparent about upcoming information.

Voice over WiFi was launched last February on a small sample of smartphones, and Free Mobile has been long overdue. Xavier Niel operator comes to reassure his subscribers: the file is in progress. This is especially the case for Nokia 3.2 holders, who benefit from a new update that brings VoLTE and VoWiFi to subscribers of the €19.99 per month plan. Other models from the manufacturer will also be updated soon, Free explains on their dedicated Twitter account @free_1337..

As a reminder, when it was launched a month ago, the service was only compatible with OnePlus and Xiaomi smartphones that were already compatible with the operator’s VoLTE, then the latter announced the implementation of a calendar to follow the various updates of manufacturers allowing access to calls in WiFi. This list is long overdue, but not for long: the launcher announces a release “by the end of the month”, which is the time required to fill in a few empty squares.

The operator also came to answer subscribers with an iPhone, while the latest iOS update made IPV6 native to its subscribers without implementing WiFi calls. We’ll have to wait, according to Free 1337,”Apple needs several months to integrate a new product from a network“.

What is VoWIFI?

This technology allows all your communications (calls, SMS/MMS) to pass through the WiFi network you are connected to. You don’t have to be connected to your own device, all WiFi is compatible and can therefore be used as an alternative connection in a building where 4G is not working well for example. The advantage is also better call quality when reception conditions are difficult.

If operators now offer VoWiFi, this is also a way for them to replace the femtocell solution, at a lower cost (Free has integrated it into Freebox Revolution and Mini 4K), especially for customers who do not have mobile coverage in their residence with the operator.
