“Freenet AG continues to strengthen its brand portfolio in order to strengthen its overall brand and increase awareness. Therefore, the main brand mobilcom-debitel, one of Germany’s leading telecommunications companies, will also bear the name freenet in the future. The brand transition is expected to be completed in the coming months, across all “analogue and digital channels” of the digital lifestyle service provider. By July 2022, the majority of Mobilcom-Debitel’s 550 stores will have been converted.

The report continues that the first tests conducted in January with stores temporarily bearing the Freenet brand were positive. According to its own information, the operator currently has 7.2 million customers in Germany in the mobile segment alone.

Mobilcom-Debitel GmbH, headquartered in Büdelsdorf (Schleswig-Holstein), was founded in 1991 by Gerhard Schmid. In 2011, Freenet bought out its competitor Debitel, which merged with Talkline. Freenet's former mobile subsidiary Mobilcom Communikationstechnik was renamed Mobilcom-Debitel GmbH and the acquired Debitel AG was renamed Mobilcom-Debitel AG. In the same year, the GmbH was fully merged into the GmbH.

In March 2016, Freenet Mobilcom-Debitel acquired Media Broadcast for around €295 million, which has since, in addition to radio broadcasting according to FM and DAB+ standards, marketed DVB-T2 HD under the Freenet TV brand.
