Gaming Laptop with GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and Core i9

With the high-end Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5 Ultrabook, the manufacturer presented a pure gaming laptop at the Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona. In the case of the G5, Lenovo combines an Intel Alder Lake processor with a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU and a fast 165Hz display.

The latest ThinkPad X1 Extreme model has been officially unveiled at MWC 2022. Called the Lenovo ThinkPad, it is housed in a case that is just 17.9mm thick and weighs 1.88kg.

There should be no doubt about gaming performance. The 12th Gen Intel Core i9 (Alder Lake) processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU with 16GB GDDR6 graphics memory and up to 110W TGP ensure that in the top model.

Cooling is provided by liquid metal thermal paste and a vapor chamber cooling system that should keep the high component temperatures in check. The specs are completed by up to 64GB of DDR5 memory clocked at 4800MHz, as well as up to 8TB of SSD storage, distributed across two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. The Extreme G5 is powered by a 90Wh battery.

165Hz display or touch screen

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5 is based on a 16-inch display, and it comes in a few different configurations. On the one hand, there’s a fast 165Hz anti-glare IPS panel with a 1200p (1920 x 1200 pixels) resolution and a peak brightness of 500 nits. Alternatively, Lenovo also offers a 1600p touchscreen, which turns out to be a bit brighter at 600 nits.

In terms of connectivity, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 are offered. The laptop also has a built-in 5G modem and an NFC chip. In terms of ports, we find two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 email ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and an SD Express 7.0 card reader.

The 1080p webcam has a privacy shutter and an IR camera for logging into Windows via facial recognition. In terms of security features, there’s Intel vPro, Intel Hardware Shield, a Nano Kensington Lock slot, a fingerprint sensor in the power button, and a built-in Tile Tracker. The latter lets you locate the laptop for up to 14 days, even when it’s turned off.
