How Apple Photo Styles Work on iPhone

With the arrival of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, Apple introduces a new feature of the camera app called photography styles. This actually allows you to make real-time changes to your images, but it’s much more than just a few parameter changes.

Photo Styles are integrated directly into Apple’s Image Processing line, meaning that using them isn’t the same as applying a filter or editing an image at a later stage.

Alternatively, you can select a pattern before shooting to improve certain characteristics of a scene. For example, two of Apple’s four preset styles are High Contrast, which highlights dark details, and Bright, which highlights colors.

You might think it’s actually possible to add contrast or change saturation in post-production, and that’s true. But what makes shooting styles different is that these adjustments are taken into account directly in the image processing line. This means that, Unlike a filter, the adjustments are done intelligently, adjusting different parts of the image accordingly.

This way you can preserve important elements of the image such as skin tones, while changing other areas (such as a sunset or a flower). It can be difficult to correct these details, when applying filters or making changes after shooting, because they affect the image as a whole.

Apple gives plenty of wiggle room to tweak their default styles further, such as adding warmth or changing the “tone” for a slightly different look. However, it is not yet clear whether iPhone owners will be allowed to add or define their own patterns.

It will be interesting to see how Apple adds more shooting modes in future updates as the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro mature. In the past, the company has overhauled features by adding new features in incremental iOS updates, including night mode and new Animoji characters.

Photo styles are just a small part of the Apple camera fix that comes with the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro models. Other improvements include new, more sensitive lenses and sensors, and Cinema Mode For smooth focus, image stabilization and ProRes support on Pro models.
