At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, automaker Hyundai is showcasing a new technology concept: “mobility.” Avatars play a role in this. Robots must act as intermediaries between the real world and the virtual world.
The connection of smart devices to the metaverse extends mobility to virtual reality. This should enable people to overcome the physical limitations of movement in space and time. This concept is known as “metamobility”.
Engineers assume that the boundary between reality and the virtual world will soon disappear in navigation. Additional advances in robotics technologies, such as artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, support this strategic project. Intelligent peripherals, such as those used in the context of Urban Air Mobility (UAM), will serve as access to the Metaverse platform in the future.
According to Hyundai’s vision, transportation as smart devices will allow access to virtual spaces. Robots connect virtual reality with the real world, thus enabling virtual experiences in the car as well. Depending on the needs and desires of the passengers, the vehicle can, for example, serve as a meeting room for work or as a 3D platform for video games.
In contrast to the current form of virtual reality, Metaverse enables users to make changes in the real world through robotics and digital twin technology (avatar). Virtualization of physical objects, places or processes will be possible in the future through the further development of sensors and actuators.
For example, if a user visits a digital copy of his apartment in the Metaverse while he is in fact not at home, he can still take care of his pet and even beat him up with the help of an avatar robot. Engineers say real everyday experiences will also be possible in “virtual reality”.
“The idea behind portability is that space, time and distance become irrelevant,” said Chang Song, President and Head of Transportation as a Service (TaaS) at Hyundai Motor Group. “By connecting robots to the metaverse, we can move freely between the real world and the virtual world.” And if the on-site experience transcends the proxy that the Metaverse makes possible, then bots are an extension of our senses.
