Mojang Announces the end of virtual reality support for the game Minecraft After March 2025. This decision affects devices such as Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and Meta Quest via Quest Link. Last month, the studio actually announced the end of PSVR support for Minecraft, signaling a complete abandonment of the VR offering. Please note that players will of course still be able to access their worlds and purchases on non-VR devices.
Despite this scheduled shutdown, Minecraft players on PC can still enjoy the game in VR via the Java version, using third-party mods like Vivecraft or standalone VR ports like QuestCraft. As a reminder, Minecraft began offering virtual reality on Samsung's Gear VR headsets in 2016 before expanding support to other platforms such as Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR. So Microsoft is cleaning up the virtual or augmented reality side: after abandoning Minecraft Earth in 2020 (the mobile and augmented reality version of Minecraft) and the sudden closure of HoloLens, it seems that the Redmond company no longer wants to touch it directly or indirectly, to technologies /Services/XR Software. After all, there will always be time for repurposing in this area if XR technologies end up being democratized…
