New – when the culprits are caught in the cell phone

So-called “cell phone speed cameras” became operational in the Netherlands. Cameras detect electronic devices in the hands of drivers. The associated fine is exorbitant.

With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), the Dutch authorities are taking action against drivers who use their cell phones in their ears. Smartphone speed cameras basically work like a traditional speed trap. With the exception of this technology, cell phones, tablets, navigation systems and other electronic devices in the driver’s hands can be observed – and they can be identified by the image of the driver’s upper body and lap, as well as the vehicle’s license plate number.

Dutch authorities charge 240 euros for the “cell phone bugger”. This is not the only reason why German drivers on the road in the neighboring country prepare for the new speed cameras. If you do not use electronic devices while driving, you are ultimately also contributing to your safety and the safety of other road users.
