OpenAI Releases ChatGPT Images 2.5 With Sharper Details and More Precise Editing

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Images 2.5, an upgraded version of its image-generation technology that promises sharper visual details, faster generation speeds and more reliable editing. The release arrives five months after ChatGPT Images 2 brought a significant expansion of the company’s image-creation capabilities.

ChatGPT Images 2.5 Focuses on Quality, Speed and Editing

ChatGPT Images 2 introduced several major improvements over OpenAI’s earlier image-generation tools, including support for 2K resolution and multiple aspect ratios. It also added the ability to incorporate web research for current information, expanded support for non-Latin languages and offered Instant and Thinking intelligence levels.

Images 2.5 builds on those capabilities with improvements designed to make generated visuals more realistic and image editing more consistent.

OpenAI says the new version delivers “sharper details, faster generation, more precise editing, and better tools for creating and sharing.”

According to the company, “Images 2.5 produces more natural lighting and richer textures, is better at preserving the subjects in your reference photos, and follows editing instructions more reliably across multiple turns.”

Image Generation Latency Reduced by Up to 50%

Speed is another major focus of the update. OpenAI says it has reduced image-generation latency by as much as 50% compared with Images 2.0.

“We’ve also reduced image generation latency by up to 50% compared with Images 2.0, so you can generate images and refine your concepts more quickly,” the company said.

The improvement could be particularly useful for creators and professionals who repeatedly refine images through conversational instructions rather than generating a single finished visual.

New Sketch Feature Expands Image Creation Tools

Alongside improvements to the underlying image-generation technology, OpenAI is introducing a new Sketch feature that allows users to draw directly inside ChatGPT.

A sketch can then serve as a visual reference for image generation, giving users another way to communicate composition, object placement and other visual ideas without relying entirely on written prompts.

OpenAI is also adding templates for popular image formats. Other new sharing capabilities include the ability to share image-generation prompts, allowing other users to experiment with or build on the same ideas.

GPT-Image-2.5 Models Coming to OpenAI API

Developers will also gain access to two versions of the Images 2.5 technology through OpenAI’s API: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst.

GPT-Image-2.5 Flare Targets Broad Image Applications

OpenAI describes GPT-Image-2.5 Flare as the default option for most applications. The model brings the new generation, editing and quality improvements to the API while delivering higher-quality images than GPT-Image-2 at 50% lower latency.

The company says Flare is suited to creator and social media content, product experiences, visual search, rapid image prototyping and applications that require high-volume image generation.

GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst Designed for Premium Visual Workflows

GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst is intended for higher-end workflows requiring tighter control over successive edits.

OpenAI says the model is designed for creative and editing applications such as production-ready advertising campaigns and polished product imagery, where maintaining visual consistency during multiple editing steps can be especially important.

Images 2.5 Rolls Out Across OpenAI Products

“Images 2.5 is rolling out today to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex users across all tiers on desktop, mobile, and web,” OpenAI said.

The release expands OpenAI’s image-generation platform beyond improvements in raw visual quality, with faster processing, reference-image preservation, conversational editing, sketch-based input and new developer models.

With ChatGPT Images 2.5, OpenAI is continuing to position image creation as a core part of its multimodal platform, giving everyday users, professional creators and developers more control over how AI-generated visuals are created and refined.
