Perso on Mobile: Three Planned Options

The government wants to bring the ID card to the smartphone in three ways – with different features.

There have been efforts for a long time to make the classic ID card also available digitally on smartphones. The E-Perso for the smartphone will have many advantages, but there have always been problems with the layout. Now it should be your electronic ID

In three versions on mobile
Come. Smart-eID can replace the entire ID card. There should also be a Smart eID version with a lower security level. Finally, it is also possible to have a basic ID, which can be used in a business environment such as visiting a hotel or car rental company.

According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Smart-eID is scheduled to start in December 2021. From this date onwards, interested users can store the data stored in their ID card in the secure component of their smartphone. In combination with the free AusweisApp2, the online authentication must then be done. Impractical: To do this, the real ID has to be read over and over again via NFC before each legitimization. However, this technology is currently only suitable for a few smartphones. The certification required for this by the Federal Office of Information Security has so far been implemented only by Samsung. Only the Galaxy S20 series has been released, but newer devices will follow. Future models of the Galaxy A series should also have a certified chip. A software update can also enable older models with a secure item to be released. According to the federal government, there have been no further commitments from other manufacturers yet. On the other hand, the second option is managed without a security chip, but then it can only be used for applications with a lower level of security.
