Preview: Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater, or Paralysis in the Face of Genius

In addition to our three-hour session with Silent Hill 2, we also managed to spend an hour with Naked Snake. The opportunity to go from the beginning of the game to the end of Virtious Mission and its small plot development, which we will remain a mystery, if no one in the room has ever played Snake Eater in their life. If we do have the console available for an hour, let's not forget that we are dealing with a game by Hideo Kojima, written by Hideo Kojima, and directed by Hideo Kojima. Which means about 40 minutes of cutscenes for about 20 minutes of actual gameplay.

Delta MGS and Omega

Noriaki Okamura, the remake’s producer, certainly wasn’t lying about the merchandise during the game’s recent June preview. The goal here is to be as faithful to the base game as possible, sometimes even when it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Did the fact that we played the Silent Hill 2 remake, which skillfully repurposed the original, affect our appreciation of the time we spent with MGS Delta? Quite possibly. But from what we saw, the MGS3 remake seems to be content with graphical improvements and some comfort improvements and that’s about it. So what can we say in the context of a preview of a game that promises to be a near-exact remake, or could the term remake itself be moot?

We can almost sum up our session by saying that it is almost over. MGS3 But more beautiful, but for the sake of prose, let's not stop there. If we understand the desire and need to keep the plot or setting completely intact, it is difficult to imagine that the game design has not been affected by a single pixel. We could have hoped that the larger, reworked environments would be less of a corridor, to give us the feeling that we are really in the jungle, but we can still give that up in the name of sacred fidelity to the original work. It is difficult to accept that every object has not changed its place and that every enemy is in exactly the same place, with the same behavior as in the base game.

We might as well tell you that if you know the original well, this new version will be a walk in the park as the smallest structural aspects are copied and pasted here. We found Sokolov in thirty seconds with his watch in hand, applying the same approach as in the original, which was recently made via MGS Collection Vol. 1. Sure, we really appreciate the great graphics makeover of Unreal Engine 5, and we thank the team for adding a quick interface to change the appearance of your camo without having to go through the menu every time, just like the simplified radio interface. The addition of new and more modern controls, especially in camera management, is noticeable, but ultimately has little impact on sense The game is comprehensive and this new version raises a lot of questions.

Fear of God

Instead of a detailed preview of a game session consisting mainly of cutscenes, let’s ask ourselves how we got here? Is the ridiculous reverence for Kojima paralyzing Konami’s fear of still having to live with this bad image after a painful divorce, even after nearly a decade? During an on-site interview following the preview, Noriaki Okamura himself told me that he was aware of this. “Trust was the first thing we had to get, we knew the fans didn't believe in us and we didn't think we could handle the Metal Gear Solid license.” As sad as this statement may sound, it shows us that there is a (easily justifiable) fear as a driving force within the development team.

Under these circumstances, how can we hope that the latter would calmly consider touching a small part of the original structure? MGS3 It's still an excellent game that has stood the test of time, but there was a lot that needed to be done to preserve its essence while making it more intense and immersive. But the fear of rehashing Kojima's work even slightly, of being dismissive, bordering on cultish for some, means we end up with Delta MGS Which seems to be on the road without taking any risks. This new version will undoubtedly be excellent, since the base game is excellent, but this short hour alone was enough to show us that it will be exactly the same game, and some will be happy, and others will be disappointed.
