This Thursday, September 19, at the stadium Claude Papi Porto Vecchio opening New mobile aquatic centre in southern Corsica. “It's national first! The concept is to be able to move as close to the user as possible, whatever the area.the business manager develops. It is enough to meet the needs of the seven municipalities of southern Corsica, none of which have a municipal swimming pool.
“Before, there were urban beaches where children learned to swim. Today, they have less contact with the sea because of movement restrictions.“This mobile aquatic centre, with a swimming pool eight metres long and two metres wide, will criss-cross the communal area, stopping at specific villages,” explains Dominique Verdoni, the elected official in charge of education.
Introduction to Swimming
Inside the semi-trailer, a group of young children are already discovering the joys of breaststroke swimming, under the gaze of amazed visitors. “This pool lets them learn about swimming before they can jump into the deep end.”“Explains Jean-Christophe Angelini, Mayor of Porto-Vecchio and President of the Community of Municipalities.
About 830 students are scheduled to benefit from swimming lessons. “We realized that a large number of children do not know how to swim. This learning is a matter of safety, especially on the island!”“It is a great honour for us to be part of the city,” says Gianni Giuseppe, Mayor of Figari and Vice President for Sport.
The equipment, which costs 650,000 euros, was financed by the Community of Corsica, the National Sports Agency and the Community of Municipalities. The first pilot phase, with the rental of a mobile swimming pool last spring, proved decisive according to Laurence Geraci, Director General of Services for the Community of Municipalities of Southern Corsica: “Not all schools have the capacity to travel. The mobile aquatic center will be a complement to the future community swimming pool.”
Many residents of Porto Vecchia are waiting for the construction of the communal swimming pool at the Brunello stadium, whose construction has been repeatedly postponed for years. Jean-Christophe Angelini wants to reassure them: “This mobile aquatic center will not replace your community pool! It's not one or the other!”
According to the council member, the building permit for the future 25-metre pool is due to be submitted early next year. “There was a period of reflection because the swimming pool is expensive. For the complex, it requires 12 million euros to operate and 10% of that amount is paid every year.”
Faced with rising energy costs, the municipality was forced to opt for a 25-metre pool instead of the 50-metre one initially planned. In 2022, 29 municipal swimming pools across France were forced to close due to inflation.
